An age calculator gives you the precise time between a birth date and any other date. This goes beyond just subtracting years: it accounts for varying month lengths and leap years to give an exact breakdown.
Parents track their children's age for medical appointments. Pediatricians often ask for age in months during the first two years, and in years and months after that. A parent of a child born on March 15, 2025 can confirm the child is 1 year, 4 months, and 3 days old as of July 18, 2026.
HR departments verify age for retirement planning. If an employee's birth date is November 3, 1965, HR can calculate that they will turn 65 on November 3, 2030, which is the traditional retirement age in many countries.
Pet owners calculate their pet's age in human terms. A dog born on January 10, 2020 is 6 years and 6 months old in calendar years, but the equivalent human age depends on breed and size. The calculator provides the exact calendar age as a starting point.
Genealogy researchers use age calculators to verify historical records. If a census record from 1901 lists someone as 34, their birth year should be around 1866 or 1867. The calculator helps pin down the exact birth date range.
Age calculation is more complex than simple subtraction because months have different lengths. If someone was born on January 31, their one-month anniversary is February 28 (or 29 in a leap year), not February 31. The calculator handles this by counting complete years, then complete months, then remaining days.
The tool also calculates total days, weeks, hours, and seconds lived, which gives a sense of scale. A 40-year-old has lived approximately 14,600 days, 350,000 hours, and 1.26 billion seconds.
Additional information includes the zodiac sign (based on birth date), Chinese zodiac animal (based on birth year), birthstone (based on birth month), and generation label (based on birth year range). These are cultural associations, not scientific classifications.

Things to be careful about
How is age calculated?
Age is calculated by counting complete years between the birth date and target date, then complete months, then remaining days. This accounts for varying month lengths and leap years, giving an exact age rather than an approximation.
What happens if I was born on February 29?
In non-leap years, your birthday is typically observed on February 28 or March 1. The calculator counts your age from the birth date, so in non-leap years it considers February 28 as the anniversary. You still age one year per calendar year.
Can I calculate age as of a specific date, not today?
Yes. Enter a target date and the calculator shows age as of that date. This is useful for historical research, calculating someone's age at a past event, or planning for a future milestone.
How are total days, hours, and seconds calculated?
Total days is the number of complete days between the birth date and target date. Hours is days multiplied by 24. Seconds is hours multiplied by 3,600. These are approximate because they do not account for leap seconds or timezone changes.
What is the difference between Western and Korean age counting?
In the Western system, you are 0 years old at birth and gain a year on each birthday. In the traditional Korean system, you are 1 year old at birth and gain a year on New Year's Day. This calculator uses the Western system.
How accurate is the zodiac sign calculation?
Zodiac signs are based on the tropical zodiac, which divides the year into 12 fixed segments. The calculator uses standard Western zodiac date ranges. Due to precession of the equinoxes, the actual constellations no longer align with these dates, but the Western zodiac system uses the fixed date ranges.
What is a birthstone?
A birthstone is a gem traditionally associated with each month of the year. The modern list was standardized by the American Gem Trade Association. Birthstones are a cultural tradition, not a scientific classification.
How are generations defined?
Generation labels (Baby Boomer, Gen X, Millennial, Gen Z, Gen Alpha) are sociological categories based on birth year ranges. The ranges used by this tool follow commonly accepted definitions, though exact boundaries vary by source.
Age calculations are exact for calendar dates. The Western age counting system is used (0 at birth, +1 on each birthday). Total seconds and hours are approximate and do not account for leap seconds. Cultural information (zodiac, birthstone, generation) follows commonly accepted Western conventions.
