Meteor showers are one of the easiest astronomical events to watch. You do not need a telescope, a tracking mount, or special filters. Just a dark sky, patience, and a lawn chair. In 2026, there are about a dozen meteor showers worth watching, but three stand out as the best of the year: the Perseids in August, the Geminids in December, and the Quadrantids in January.
The Perseids are especially well-timed in 2026. The peak falls on the night of August 12-13, just one day before a new moon. That means the sky will be dark with no moonlight washing out the fainter meteors. Under ideal conditions, you could see 50 to 75 meteors per hour.
What is a meteor shower?
A meteor shower happens when Earth passes through a stream of debris left by a comet or asteroid. As the tiny particles, most no bigger than a grain of sand, hit Earth's atmosphere at high speed, they burn up and create bright streaks of light. We call these streaks meteors, or shooting stars.
Each meteor shower is associated with a specific parent body. The Perseids come from comet Swift-Tuttle. The Geminids come from asteroid 3200 Phaethon. The Quadrantids come from asteroid 2003 EH1. When Earth crosses the debris trail at the same point in its orbit each year, we get a predictable shower.

The Quadrantids have a very narrow peak window of only about 6 hours, unlike most showers which last a day or more. If you miss the peak night, you will miss the show entirely. The Geminids and Perseids have broader peaks, giving you 2-3 nights of good viewing.
The Perseids: 2026's best shower
The Perseids are the most popular meteor shower of the year, and 2026 offers excellent viewing conditions. The peak occurs on the night of August 12-13, with the best viewing between midnight and dawn. The new moon is on August 14, so moonlight will be minimal throughout the peak night.
The Perseids radiate from the constellation Perseus, which rises in the northeast after dark in the Northern Hemisphere. But you do not need to look at Perseus to see meteors. They can appear anywhere in the sky. Just look up and give your eyes 20-30 minutes to adjust to the dark.
Under a truly dark sky, away from city lights, you can expect to see 50 to 75 meteors per hour at peak. In 2026, the Perseids coincide with the August 12 total solar eclipse, making it an extraordinary week for astronomy. If you are traveling to Iceland or northern Spain for the eclipse, stay an extra night for the meteor shower.
The Geminids: December's hidden gem
The Geminids in December are technically the strongest shower of the year, often producing up to 120 meteors per hour at peak. They are less popular than the Perseids because December nights are cold in the Northern Hemisphere, but the reward is worth the discomfort.
In 2026, the Geminids peak on the night of December 13-14. The moon will be a waxing crescent, setting early in the evening, leaving the sky dark for most of the night. The Geminids are also unusual because they are caused by an asteroid (3200 Phaethon) rather than a comet, which means the particles are denser and the meteors tend to be brighter and slower-moving.
How to watch a meteor shower
- Find a dark sky location, at least 30 miles from a city. Light pollution is the single biggest factor in how many meteors you will see.
- Check the moon phase. A full moon can wash out all but the brightest meteors. The best showers happen near a new moon.
- Arrive early and let your eyes adjust for 20-30 minutes. Avoid looking at your phone, as even a brief flash of white light resets your night vision.
- Lie flat on your back and look straight up. A reclining lawn chair or blanket works well. Dress warmer than you think you need, especially in winter.
- Do not use binoculars or a telescope. Meteors move too fast to track, and the restricted field of view means you will miss most of them. Your naked eyes are the best tool.
- Be patient. Meteor rates vary throughout the night. You might see nothing for 10 minutes, then 5 in a row. Give it at least an hour.
What about the Quadrantids?
The Quadrantids kick off the year on January 3-4 with a strong but brief display. They can produce up to 120 meteors per hour, but the peak lasts only about 6 hours, compared to 24-48 hours for most other showers. This narrow peak is caused by the debris stream being very young and tightly concentrated.
In 2026, the Quadrantids peaked under a nearly full moon, which reduced visible rates significantly. The next good opportunity for the Quadrantids will be in 2028, when the peak coincides with a new moon.
Meteor shower photography tips
Photographing meteors is easier than you might think, but it requires a camera with manual controls and a tripod. Set your camera to manual mode, use the widest aperture (f/2.8 or f/4), set ISO to 3200 or 6400, and use a 15-25 second exposure. Point the camera at the sky and take continuous shots using an intervalometer or by locking the shutter.
You will capture lots of frames with nothing in them, but when a meteor crosses your field of view, you will get a bright streak across the stars. The key is to take many photos over the course of an hour or more and sort through them later.
