Date math is one of those things that seems straightforward until you try to do it manually. How many days until the project deadline? If a contract starts Monday and runs for 30 business days, when does it end? How many working days are left in July if you subtract public holidays?

Times & Dates has two tools for date arithmetic. The Date Calculator does general calculations—add or subtract days, weeks, months, or years from a date, and find the span between two dates. The Business Days Calculator does the same thing but only counts working days, skipping weekends and public holidays.

The difference matters. A 30-day deadline and a 30-business-day deadline are not the same thing. Thirty calendar days from July 1 is July 31. Thirty business days from July 1 is August 12—almost two weeks later.

What the Date Calculator does

The Date Calculator performs arithmetic on calendar dates. You give it a starting date and an operation—add 45 days, subtract 2 weeks, add 3 months—and it returns the resulting date. You can also calculate the number of days, weeks, or months between two dates.

A content manager in Toronto uses the Date Calculator to plan editorial calendars. She enters the publication date—say, September 15, 2026—and subtracts 14 days to get the draft deadline (September 1), then subtracts another 7 days for the outline deadline (August 25). The Date Calculator counts every day on the calendar. Weekends, holidays, leap days—it does not discriminate. If you add 60 days to January 1, you get March 2 (or March 1 in a leap year). The tool handles month-length differences automatically: adding one month to January 31 gives February 28 (or 29), not March 3.

What the Business Days Calculator does

The Business Days Calculator counts only working days—Monday through Friday by default, with an option to include or exclude Saturdays. It also subtracts public holidays for the country you select, using data from the Nager.Date API which covers over 100 countries.

A procurement officer in Manchester is waiting for a 15-business-day delivery window that started on July 7, 2026. She enters July 7 as the start date, sets 15 business days, and selects the United Kingdom for holidays. The calculator skips two weekends and one holiday (if any falls in that range) and returns July 28 as the expected delivery date.

When to use the Business Days Calculator

Use the Business Days Calculator when the answer depends on working days. Service level agreements, shipping estimates, construction timelines, and government processing times all count business days. A passport renewal that takes "6–8 weeks" means business weeks, not calendar weeks.

A construction project manager in Denver is scheduling a foundation pour. The concrete needs 7 days to cure before framing can start. But the site is closed on weekends, and July 4 is a holiday. He enters the pour date (July 1) and adds 7 business days. The calculator returns July 10—skipping the weekend and the July 4 holiday. Framing starts July 13 (the following Monday).

A legal team in Sydney is filing a contract with a 21-business-day review period, starting July 20, 2026. They select Australia for holidays, enter July 20 as the start, and set 21 business days. The tool accounts for weekends and any Australian public holidays in that window, returning the exact deadline date. No manual counting required.

Common mistakes

Confusing business days with calendar days in contracts. If a contract says "30 days" without specifying which kind, courts usually interpret this as calendar days. But if it says "30 business days," that is roughly 42 calendar days. Always check the wording and use the right calculator.

Forgetting that public holidays vary by country—and sometimes by state or province. The Business Days Calculator lets you select the country, but if your contract involves a regional holiday that is not in the national calendar, you may need to adjust manually. For example, Thanksgiving in the US is a national holiday, but Patriots' Day in Massachusetts is state-specific.

Assuming all countries have Saturday–Sunday weekends. Most do, but Israel's weekend is Friday–Saturday, and several Middle Eastern countries have Friday–Saturday or Sunday–Thursday work weeks. The Business Days Calculator defaults to Saturday–Sunday but offers customization for these cases.
