How It Works

The calculator starts with a baseline life expectancy from the WHO Global Health Observatory for your country and gender. For a US male, the baseline is 74.8 years. For a Japanese female, it is 87.6 years. These are 2023 estimates.

Five lifestyle factors then adjust the baseline up or down. Each factor has a range of adjustments derived from large cohort studies. Smoking carries the largest penalty: heavy smoking subtracts 10 years. Exercise provides the largest benefit: regular activity adds 4 years. BMI, alcohol, and sleep each contribute smaller adjustments.

The adjustments are additive. A US male with baseline 74.8 who smokes heavily (minus 10), never exercises (minus 3.5), has BMI 30 to 34.9 (minus 4.0), drinks moderately (minus 1.0), and sleeps 7 to 8 hours (0) gets 74.8 minus 18.5 = 56.3 years. The same person who never smoked, exercises actively, has normal BMI, drinks lightly, and sleeps well gets 74.8 plus 4.0 = 78.8 years.

The estimated death date is your birth date plus the adjusted life expectancy. The time remaining is the adjusted life expectancy minus your current age. Both update live as you change inputs.

Common Mistakes and Edge Cases

Things to keep in mind

  • This is a statistical estimate, not a prediction: The calculator uses population averages and risk factor adjustments. Your actual lifespan depends on genetics, healthcare, accidents, and many unmeasurable factors. Two people with identical inputs can have very different outcomes.
  • Adjustments are additive, not multiplicative: The calculator adds or subtracts years for each factor independently. In reality, risk factors interact. Smoking and obesity together may compound more than the sum of their individual effects. The additive model is a simplification.
  • Country baselines are averages: The WHO baseline for your country includes people with all lifestyles. If you have a healthier than average lifestyle, your personal baseline may be higher than the country average before adjustments.
  • BMI is an imperfect measure: BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat. A bodybuilder with BMI 28 may not have the same risk as a sedentary person with BMI 28. Use BMI as a rough guide, not a definitive health measure.
  • Quitting smoking recovers years: The calculator shows a former smoker who quit 5 or more years ago loses only 1.0 year, compared to 10.0 for a current heavy smoker. Quitting at any age adds years back, but quitting earlier recovers more.
